Are High Protein Diets Bad For your Bones?

I have a question Mr Labrada, I was drinking a Labrada Lean Body on The Go in the changing rooms at my gym yesterday and ended up in a discussion with a  runner who's competed in many events who said that a high protein diet is bad for your bones and she suggested a high carbohydrate diet instead.

Can you shed any light on the subject for me, I would like to be armed with a proper response when I see her next.

 Hello Polly thank you for your question. I'm sure this lady was well meaning and I'm sure she's an excellent runner, however this doesn't make her a nutritionist or qualified to speak on the subject.

Let's deal with the facts, first and foremost : There is absolutely no peer reviewed data to suggest that protein has a negative impact on bone health, density or strength.

In fact there are studies, including one published in the American Journal of Clinical nutrition, which showed a small but noteworthy IMPROVEMENT in bone health from higher protein diets. 

If protein supplements had a negative effect on bone health, we would be inundated with stories from millions of fitness enthusiasts who use protein supplements on a daily basis, and have done, not just for years, but for decades. 

Once the data is reviewed and the real world feedback analysed, we find these stories are no more than gym chatter and hearsay.
