Healing by Material Means

Recently I was reading a book called Some Answered Questions by Abdu’l-Baha and the chapter called Healing by Material Means caught my attention to the point of wanting to write about it. I don’t like to take medications, even just an aspirin, unless I really have to and for me to go to the doctor, I must be very sick. The topic of healing by material means, versus medication, is something that has fascinated me for a long time and it is reinforced when I see the long list of side effects medication has.

The body is composed of elements, but in equilibrium and when one ingredient in the body increases and another decreases equilibrium is disturbed and disease occurs. When I don’t feel well, usually I brought it upon myself by eating something too greasy, too sugary or just too much food which upsets the balance. Especially because my stomach isn’t used to eating processed food in large quantities. Cause of disease can be physical or nervous one and diseases are healed by taking medication to reestablish the equilibrium.

Curing Without Drugs

The book went on to say “Now the readjustment of these constituents of the human body is obtained by two means—either by medicines or by aliments; and when the constitution has recovered its equilibrium, disease is banished…The science of medicine is still in a condition of infancy; it hasn’t reached maturity. But when it has reached that point, cures will be performed by things which are not repulsive to the smell and taste of man- that is to say by aliments , fruits and vegetables which are agreeable to the taste and have an agreeable smell. “
It further explained that all the elements that are combined in man also exist in vegetables, and when one element of the human body diminishes, he can restore the equilibrium, and thus cure himself, by eating food that contains the diminished ingredient.

How Animals Heal

“The majority of the diseases which overtake man also overtake the animal, but the animal is not cured by drugs. In the mountains, as in the wilderness, the animal’s physician is the power of taste and smell. The sick animal smells the plants that grow in the wilderness; he eats those that are sweet and fragrant to his smell and taste, and is cured. The cause of his healing is this. When the sugar ingredient has become diminished in his constitution, he begins to long for sweet things; therefore, he eats an herb with a sweet taste, for nature urges and guides him; its smell and taste please him, and he eats it. The sugar ingredient in his nature will be increased, and health will be restored. “

Healing with Food

The book confirms what I believe: it is possible to cure by foods but the science of medicine hasn’t developed to that point yet. I look forward to “when the science of medicine reaches perfection, treatment will be given by foods, aliments, fragrant fruits and vegetables, and by various waters, hot and cold in temperature”. May be next time, when you are not feeling well, all you need to do is drink hot water and eat a piece of fruit.
