Change your Life with the Power of Thinking

Change your Life with the Power of Thinking
By Aris Akavan, ACE CPT, BS MIS

“Consider not the present condition, but rather foresee the future and the end. A seed in the beginning is very small, but in the end a great tree. One should not consider the seed, but the tree and its abundance of blossoms, leaves and fruits.” This quote by Abdu’l-Baha made me ponder upon vision, patience and the power of thought. Vision to foresee that the seed will one day be a tree, patience to wait till it happens and power of thought to stay positive when the idea sounds impossible. How often we feel that something is impossible but looking back, after the event, it almost seems easy? All we had to do was change our thinking, take few actions and patiently wait.

Conquer your Fears
I remember when I first started doing 5k running races how nervous I was at the start line. I remember the nervousness last year in January, at my first 10k, and the excitement after the race. I remember the butterflies in my stomach the first time I did a triathlon and the excitement the second time when I improved my time. The third time I remember the “being sick to my stomach” feeling, that I might not beat “my own time” as I am very competitive with myself. For the Adventure Run I remember struggling to run on a hilly course and on sand and the excitement of running in mud, of crawling under a net and trying to run in waist high water. A year ago I said I could not do a 10k but then signed up for it, practiced and did better than expected. I always said I could never do a half marathon as I don’t like running that much, but a week ago I decided to try it anyway and signed up for the upcoming one a month away. With each I was scared of failing, but after the race I laughed at how I said I would never do it however afterwards felt so empowered. These events taught me that I can do what I previously though impossible!

Change your Attitudes
We often feel small and powerless about completing a task but with persistence we are able to eventually accomplish it. Do you think athletes that compete on the international circuit never doubted their skills? They did, but instead of looking at the present condition, they envisioned themselves reaching the goal and trained hard to get there. To accomplish the task you first change the “I can’t do” thinking to “that is possible”. The next step is to think of how to make it happen and the last step is to make it happen. How often have you read about someone who was told they would never walk again and are now participating in marathons? If you asked them how they got to where they are, they will tell you that they envisioned themselves walking, patiently tried to walk every day, even if for few minutes, and didn’t give up on days it seemed an impossible task.

Think of past accomplishments and what it took to get there and know that you can do it again. Set your mind to it, work hard at it and don’t give up till you reach the goal even with many setbacks along the way. Don’t look at yourself as the seed but envision when you will be the fruit bearing tree.
