Peppermint has been used as an age old remedy for stomach issues – from gas and bloating to gallbladder disease. Research studies suggest that peppermint fares better than most herbs that are used for medicinal purposes – with evidence that it is fairly effective in treating IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)
What makes peppermint so effective is the oil, specifically the Menthol found in the oil. Peppermint has been used for 1,000’s of years, back to ancient Egypt; and the studies for medicinal purposes are ongoing. For example, in a 2006 study, researchers found that the simple aroma of peppermint enhances memory and alertness in subjects. Peppermint oil has also been found to help prevent dental caries and freshen bad breath.
Use peppermint leaves in tea and also in cooking. Mint leaf can be added to salads for a refreshing taste and can be tossed into a pitcher of water, sliced lemons and cucumbers for a cooling, crisp low-calorie beverage. Of course, you can always chew a few leaves for a breath boost!
