Can you Exercise Without Spending a Dime?
By Aris Akavan, ACE CPT, BS MIS
In the last few years the economy has impacted all of us and probably changed how you think about your finances. Gone are the days that most of your services would be done by hired help and you would not think twice about using your credit card. But does that mean that if you want to save money, you have to cut out exercise as well?
Cost of Exercise
Let’s first find out what is the cost involved with exercise. The first thing that comes to mind is probably the cost of shoes and the cost of a gym membership. Then there is the cost of workout clothes, accessories such as gym bags, tracking watches, water bottles and equipment such as stability balls, weights and mats. The list could be longer but these are the basics.
Removing the Cost of Exercise
Analyzing the above list you could exercise without spending a dime. The gym membership can be replaced by the outdoors, you probably already own a pair of running shoes and an old T-shirt and shorts will do as well as the moisture wicking shirts. The water bottles they give away for free will do as well as the insulated one and your regular watch can track your time. As for equipment you don’t need any as your body weight is the best resistance. But if you are going to spend money I suggest you get a pair of shoes with good support to avoid sheen splints or other pain.
Take Care of Your Health
All over the world the situation is deteriorating and at times we all feel like we no longer have control over anything. However, we still have control over how we respond to the situation. Whether you have a job or don’t have one, whether you are working too many hours or not enough, you do have control over taking care of your health. Lace up your shoes and go for a relaxing walk or for a run in the park. And you can follow it up with the old traditional jumping jacks, pull ups, crunches, dips and push up.
