Starting with “Why?”

I recently read Simon Sinek’s excellent book, Start with Why. Even though the book was written as a business book, there is a great personal lesson to be learned there and applied to your fitness program…

A lot of times people will chase a goal, without really asking themselves why am I doing this?

In other words, you might know that you want to get into shape, drop 10 pounds of body fat or put a half-inch on your biceps, but have you ever asked yourself “why?”

The answer might be as simple as “because I want to look and feel better”; or “because I want to impress_________”
(Significant-other name, insert here)

Regardless of the reason, when you ask yourself the ‘why’ question, you will get closer to the root of that which really motivates you. You can then use this to refuel your efforts, until you have reached your goals.

No matter what your “why” is, I would encourage you to ask yourself the question; and then write the answer down on a piece of paper where you can see it.

Refer to it often, and then picture in your mind‘s eye the actions that you will take to attain your goals.

This action is about association. Once you know your why, then you ask yourself “how?”

You know that if you go to the gym, work out consistently, and eat healthy nutritious foods, you will attain your goal eventually.

So you create and reinforce a link between your WHY and HOW in your mind as you workout and eat right.

Remind yourself often of why you are working out so hard and eating right. Picture yourself having attained your goal, and how it will make you feel?

Reinforcing this connection every day, will surely help to make your goals more tangible, and it will motivate you to follow through with your actions.
