Progress Not Perfection
Instead of focusing on achieving perfection from our workouts and nutrition program, we should focus on our progress. Ask yourself “am I better this month than I was last month? What progress have I made?”
By developing a progress mindset, you focus on the positive changes, however small, that you are making. This is inherently gratifying and will keep you positively motivated.
If, on the other hand, you focus only on the question of whether you have achieved perfection or not, you are bound to become disappointed.
It’s like setting your sights on the horizon. You can run towards the horizon but you will never reach it. Perfection is elusive, and in most cases, totally unrealistic.
This week I would encourage you to start working out if you’re not already doing so. There’s never a better time to start than right now. Don’t wait, and don’t create arbitrary pre-conditions for yourself…like losing 10 pounds before you go to the gym.
Just get started.
And if you are already working out, like most of us, then I would encourage you to become progress focused, and not perfection focus.
You’re going to be a lot happier for it and you’re going to get a lot more enjoyment out of your training and nutrition program. Try it and see.
Have a healthy and happy week,
