Question: I love coffee. I drink it almost every morning. Is this really bad for me?
Answer: The truth is that coffee is not bad for you to drink as long as you do not load it up with sugar and other types of sweeteners that contain sugar. You see, many people do not know this but it has been proven that 300 mg’s of caffeine (a main ingredient in coffee) a day can be healthy for you as the caffeine can increase your mental alertness and cause you to not be as fatigued. So as a result you will be able to get better workouts in and have more energy throughout your day!
Some other benefits of coffee are its antioxidant properties which help to prevent oxidative damage to the cells and the fact that it can decrease the risk of getting Parkinson’s disease. To top it off, the FDA considers caffeine to be a safe ingredient.
My Recommendation: What I always suggest for people to do when consuming coffee or any other substance that contains caffeine is to monitor their intake. What I mean by this is to watch how much caffeine each cup of coffee, energy drink etc. may have in them as serving sizes may be deceptive.
A cup of coffee has about 90-150 mg’s of caffeine. As long as you do not go above the 300 mg’s mark, you will be just fine! The problem I see with people is that they will drink a cup of coffee when they wake up in the morning, one at work in the break room, another in the middle of the afternoon and another when they come home from work. This obviously surpasses the 300 mg mark and is the point where people become dependent on coffee.
Through my experience over the years, I find that drinking 300 mg’s of any caffeine based beverage 5 days a week is plenty. If you were to increase it to 6-7 days a week, then you will develop a tolerance that will require you to consume more and more caffeine to feel the same effects.
So always remember to follow the guidelines prescribed in this article and you should not have any problems when drinking coffee!
